One of the city’s largest homeless camps was destroyed last night after a fire broke out outside the Sham Shui Po Jade Market.
The blaze began at around 10pm under part of the West Kowloon Corridor, facing the market. The Fire Services Department told reporters they suspected it was caused by a portable gas cooker which was being used by a street sleeper to prepare food.
According to HK01, the cooker is believed to have exploded and set fire to a number of nearby objects. The fire spread quickly across the camp and residents of the settlement was forced to evacuate the area.
A witness called the FSD, who sent multiple firetrucks and firefighters to the scene. The blaze was extinguished in about 10 minutes. Nobody was injured.
