These days if it’s not in rap form, the kids just won’t listen.

So kudos to the Hong Kong Fire Services Department, whose most recent PSA — a video about how to save a life — has some lyrical flow.

Released to celebrate the Hungry Ghost festival this Saturday, it also includes a horse head mask, a famous Hong Kong actress, and a man in a full-body blue lycra suit.

Tick, tick and tick.

The video’s narrative follows a cha chaan teng worker delivering food to the symbolic flat number 9413 (a short form for “nine deaths, one life”, literally “a narrow escape”) in a haunted apartment block.

Walking the eerie hallway, the delivery man — who, for plot clarity, mentions aloud that he has a heart condition — is spooked by a ghostly-looking elderly woman (played by veteran actress Helena Law Lan).

He doesn’t handle it well and, after yelling “ghost”, goes down clutching his chest.

The pair are then joined by a man in a full-body blue suit, who is later revealed as “anyone”. Nice.

Law then dials 999 and tells the blue man: “If you don’t save him in 10 minutes, he’ll die. You don’t need to do mouth-to-mouth to save someone’s life, you just need your hands. Music!”

With the help of two backup dancers donning horse and cow head masks, Law says to put your hands together on the victim’s chest, press about 5 centimeters-deep, and make sure to do two chest presses every one second.

The video has been viewed more than 20,000 times since it was posted on the Fire Service Department’s YouTube channel yesterday morning.

This is not the first time the city’s emergency services have used music videos to try and get their point across.

Last month, the police enlisted the help of actor and singer Wan Kwong to sing an electro house song on driving safely.

Werd.
