A fire which required over 100 Tung Chung residents to be evacuated yesterday morning was caused by an over-boiled kettle, local media reports.

According to Ming Pao, the blaze broke out at around 9:30am yesterday, after a 69-year-old woman surnamed Hui, who lives alone at Yat Tung Estate, left her kettle on the stove until it was dry, and sparked a fire.

Hui managed to escape the 25th-floor flat before it was completely scorched by the fire, firefighters told reporters. She sustained injuries to her hand and face and was taken in an unconscious state to North Lantau Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Two other people were admitted to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters managed to put out the blaze after roughly half an hour. Tung Chung fire station commander Lam So-wah told SCMP that there were no suspicious circumstances involved.
