A Hong Kong national carrying a Philippine passport was arrested in Phuket, Thailand, over the weekend for allegedly falsifying a robbery report, according to The Phuket News.
Wong Wai Ki Warwick Taboctabo was charged with violating section 173 of the Thailand Penal Code when telling police a bag containing his mobile phone and a MacBook had been stolen from him in the holiday resort.
The suspect told authorities that his bag was snatched while he was dining at a restaurant. He was, however, unable to recall the name or location of the restaurant.
The suspect also claimed he only had THB200 (around HKD46) to his name, no place to stay and no contacts in Phuket who could help him.
Further investigation by the police revealed that the suspect was in possession of a key card to the Rawai Palm Beach Resort.
A search of his room revealed a bag with clothes and a mobile phone that contained photos of the suspect.
Filing a false police report in Thailand carries a punishment of up to three years in prison and/or a fine of up to THB6,000 (HKD 1,400).
Investigations are continuing.
