Filipino domestic helper on trial for killing fellow countryman over a card game

Filipino helper, Elber Cabillon (32) is currently on trial for allegedly killing a fellow countryman, Sixto Mercurio (49). Cabillon is pleading not guilty to manslaughter.

The incident happened last year, when a group of domestic helpers were playing cards, by the harbour in Central, Hong Kong. The card game involved large amounts of money, about HK$1,000 per game.

Cabillon and Mercurio got into an argument about how the deck of cards were being dealt, whether the cards were cut properly, and suggested someone was cheating.

Mercurio got really heated when the dealer mixed up the cards again after having cut them and next thing you know things turned violent.

Cabillon allegedly punched and kicked Mercurio causing him to fall and hit his head on the ground. He suffered serious brain injuries and died four days later in the hospital.
