Festival Walk drainage system caused the leaks

An inspection carried out by the Buildings Department found the waterfall-like leaks at Festival Walk mall in Kowloon Tong on Sunday was not cause by hailstones but a damaged drainage system.

According to the Buildings Department, the drainage for water collection could not pump the heavy rainfall off the roof in time, crushing the drain, and causing water to cascade into the mall.

They confirmed that the glass roof was not damaged and Glassmaker Kennex Glassware’s manager told reporters that the tempered glass used at Festival Walk is durable enough to withstand heavy rain and even hailstones.

Festival Walk was still partially closed yesterday as cleaners continue to collect dripping water and clear out the flooding.
