Female drug addict dies in Hong Kong prison just days after arrival

A female drug addict has died in custody in Hong Kong, just four days after she was incarcerated.

The 42-year-old was remanded in the Tai Lam Centre for Women last Tuesday for possession of a dangerous drug.

A known drug abuser, she was immediately admitted to the prison’s hospital for observation and treatment.

However, at around 7am on Saturday morning, officers found her in physical discomfort and suffering shortness of breathe. Her condition deteriorated until she finally collapsed.

Medical staff performed resuscitation on the woman and called an ambulance.

She was taken to hospital for emergency rescue but was certified dead at 8:38am.

The case has been reported to the police and an inquest into her death will be held.
