Feeding Hong Kong calls for little helpers for its Festive Food Drive 2014

Do you hear the bells jingle? Yup, everyone’s favourite holiday is well on its way, and you’re no doubt gearing up for some pretty epic eating.

But as we’re also in the season of giving, perhaps you could put your expanding waistline to good use and moonlight as Santa this Christmas on behalf of Feeding Hong Kong. The local charity is calling for little helpers for its annual Festive Food Drive, when it collects and distributes extra special food parcels to families in need.

In the very first food drive in 2012, 500 parcels, called Santa Sacks (for families) and Holiday Hampers (for non-profit kitchens), were collected, packed and delivered by Christmas Day. Last year, supporters came together to double this amount to 1,000 wholesome and nutritious packages. So why not let the stakes rise to 1,500 Santa Sacks and 20 Holiday Hampers this year? After all, ‘tis the season to be generous (and ambitious)!

What’s in a Santa Sack/Holiday Hamper?

Every Santa Sack and Holiday Hamper will include:

The essentials: a selection of shelf-stable items such as rice, noodles and canned goods.
A festive treat: a jar of tasty homemade jam, made using a special recipe by Feeding HK volunteers.
Some inspiration: recipe suggestions from the community for tasty, healthy, budget-friendly meals that make the most of our Santa Sack ingredients.

Interested in helping out?

Email food-drive@feedinghk.org for a registration form. Then, simply set up a donation point in your office, school or community hall and collect the following items:

Santa Sacks (for individuals and families): individual / family sized cooking oil, instant oats, rice, noodles and pasta, plus canned fish, canned soup, dried seaweed and nuts.

Holiday Hampers (for charity kitchens): commercial-size bags of rice and canned vegetables, meat and fish plus sugar, corn flour and soy sauce.

If you have your own vehicle, you can also help with Santa Sack deliveries throughout the month. Or if you’re into cooking, buy the FHK cookbook, a brand new collection of “One Pot Wonders”, the perfect Christmas gift for a Hong Kong cook!

Alternatively, take the super easy option and check out the Pret Xmas Lunch. For every Christmas item sold, Pret a Manger will donate HKD1 to Feeding Hong Kong to help people in need this Christmas.

Eat, give, and be very, very merry!
