A Familiar Story: Mother lets child pee on the MTR, Hongkongers get angry, video goes viral

A video showing a mother letting her young daughter pee on a MTR train is going viral on Facebook. In the video, a little girl who looks to be around five years old pops a squat as her mother catches her stream of pee in a plastic bag. Of course, the bag was not a sure-proof way of containing the liquid and urine can be seen on the train of the MTR.

Fellow passengers can be heard making reproachful comments throughout the incident, saying things like “so ugly”, “this is completely out of line! “, “every station has plenty of toilets”, and “even foreigners would shake their heads at this”.

The video was posted by Facebook user Ppmung Wong just yesterday and it’s already garnered almost 8,000 shares and over 800 likes. His caption says: “Remember… Hong Kong people are not trying to separate [from mainland China]. But please don’t cross the line like this!”.

The mother had the decency at least, to wipe the floor clean of any urinary residue with toilet paper. (They came prepared! Somewhat.) A woman can be heard saying that “even when someone told them there were toilets they didn’t go”, and another responds saying “of course, they didn’t want to give up their seats”.

A middle-aged woman can be heard kindly telling an older man to move aside so that the person filming the video could get a clear shot of the mother and the child.

The comment with the most “likes”, from Facebook user Benny Miu, said: “Actually the fact she’s willing to wipe the floor is already very good…. That’s already a lot better many mainland Chinese…”

Miu used the tongue-in-cheek slang term “powerful country people”, which is used to denote mainland Chinese people.
