Hongkongers have always been really sensitive about sales or waiters speaking to them in Mandarin, as it means that they either look or dress like a mainlander.
However, in recent years, because of the influx of mainland tourists, whether you look like it or not, sales or waiters in Hong Kong will just speak to you in Mandarin, assuming that everyone shopping is usually a mainland tourist.
Newly appointed Vice-President of Operations for Disney Hong Kong, Li Deng-hai however, knows better. He realised park employees were taking this easy route, speaking to everyone in Mandarin regardless, which sometimes annoyed tourists that weren’t actually Chinese.
As the first Hongkonger managing the operations of Disney Hong Kong, Li has made steps to represent (everyone applaud!!), recently asking all park employees to greet everyone in Cantonese first.
Good job! No wonder Disney HK has been doing well lately!
