Someone bought HKD150 commemorative notes for roughly HKD680 apiece and stands to make a tidy profit if he snags buyers on Taobao.
HSBC issued the commemorative notes in honour of its 150-year anniversary, because banks are apparently allowed to indulge themselves in self-celebratory activities that affect the economy’s money supply.
According to a Facebook post made by local magazine 100most, the clever entrepreneur bought 35 notes at a cost of HKD23,880, and has put them on Taobao for RMB2,000 (HKD2,470) each.
If he sells his entire stock, he could make HKD62,570 profit – all for selling money that’s been clearly marked with its face value!
Now let’s see if any suckers actually buy them.
