A host of English Premier League greats, including Paul Scholes, Robert Pires and Robbie Fowler, are to descend on the 852 next month to take on a Hong Kong veterans side.
The trio – along with former Liverpool stars Steve McManaman and Luis Garcia, Emmanuel Petit (ex-Arsenal) and Lee Sharp (ex-Man Utd) among others – are heading east as part of the “Sky Kids EPL All Stars Tour 2015 Hong Kong”.
They will play the special exhibition match against a Hong Kong team of yesteryear at Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground on Oct. 15.
In addition to the “Golden Oldies” encounter, the under-12s Sky Kids team will take on the vets of Seiko, who won nine Hong Kong First Division League titles between 1973 and 1985 before going out of business in 1986.
Old people and children. Sounds badly thought out and hilarious.
Sky Kids Football director and former Hong Kong international Roberto Fung Ka-ki said he arranged the event for the love. “We have faced some problems in the process, including the high costs,” he told Ming Pao. “We didn’t organise it to make a profit … I have invited all the stars that Hong Kong people liked.”
Representing the local team will be Chan Fat-chi, Leung Sui-wing and Cheung Cha-tak, who all played in Hong Kong’s glorious 2-1 World Cup qualifier over China in Beijing in May 1985 – after which disgruntled home fans rioted in protest at their side’s performance, leading to 127 arrests.
Tickets for the event go on sale on Friday… let’s hope we Hongkongers can behave ourselves, regardless of the result.
Tickets can be purchases through Tom Lee Music stores or from cityline.com.hk.
