Photograph taken of Sulistyaningsih at the Hong Kong airport
The Indonesian media is outraged at the treatment of 23-year-old Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, who was cruelly beaten, starved, and tortured by her employer when she came to Hong Kong to work for the first time last year.

Sulistyaningsih before the facial scars
Originally attractive when she first arrived, Sulistyaningsih’s face was beaten so badly that she was unrecognisable in a photograph taken of her at the airport three days ago by a friend. She had severe facial swelling and festered scars all over her body. The employer, a family of four surnamed Lo, allegedly beat her with a wooden stick and poured boiling water on her.
Sulistyaningsih was too terrified to call the police until her employer secretly sent her back home three days ago, with HK$100 and a t-shirt, because of her serious injuries rendering her unable to use her hands. She was sent to the hospital in her hometown and treated for her injuries.
The Indonesian media reported it, which sparked outrage among Indonesians, including a protest by hundreds of helpers outside the Hong Kong Immigration Department. The Indonesian authorities have sought the help of Hong Kong police and are investigating the matter now.
We hope they give this heartless employer a hefty jail sentence.
