Elderly woman falls to death from Hong Kong flat trying to dry milk tea-soaked towel

An elderly woman plunged to her death yesterday after apparently falling while hanging a towel outside the window of her Tin Shui Wai flat.

Ming Pao Daily (as translated by EJI) reports that the victim, surnamed Sze, was cooking her husband a very early breakfast at 3am on Sunday morning when she spilt milk tea on the table and wiped it up with a towel.

After rinsing the towel, she leaned out of the living room window of their 18th floor flat in Shui Fung House, Tin Shui Estate, in a bid a hang it out to dry.

She, however, seemingly lost her balance and fell to her death. Police say she had told her 50-year-old son a few days before that she had been feeling dizzy.

According to the report, residents of Tin Shui Estate often avoid using the traditional bamboo drying racks installed outside their kitchen windows as they fear grease from other people’s cooking will become embedded in the fabric. However, they also admit having to hang half their bodies outside the living room window in order to dry clothes there instead.

Yuen Long District Council says Sze is survived by her husband, her son and her 20-year-old granddaughter.
