A 75-year-old newspaper vendor has been showered with gifts of fruit, food and other goodies after Apple Daily reported on the theft of HKD35,000 in cash from her purse while she slept at her stall in Mong Kok.
Many people came to her stall on Shantung Street to express their sadness at what had happened, and some offered the elderly woman, surnamed Chan, gifts of fruit and other daily necessities, reports Apple Daily.

Others expressed their concern for the elderly woman, and urged her to be careful and to avoid keeping so much cash on herself.
“I’ve seen her sleeping by herself at her stall at night, when it’s very quiet, and there’s not even a single police officer around,” said one worried neighbour.
“Some people really are awful!” exclaimed one well-wisher, referring to the thief who stole the vendor’s money (not the old lady, obvs).
Some came to buy a newspaper or a pack of tissues, and told her to keep the change from a HKD100 bill.
She gratefully exclaimed: “This is usually one day’s earnings!”

The newspaper vendor shared most of the gifts she has received, including mooncakes, with her old friends.
She told Apple Daily that she didn’t want to spend her money on renting a place, adding that even if she did she wouldn’t spend any time at the flat. That’s Hong Kong work ethic at its best/worst for you!
She added that though she hopes the police catch the perpetrator, she isn’t holding a grudge.
