An elderly couple had a lucky escape yesterday when a 18-metre-tall tree fell on their car, crushing the vehicle but leaving them unharmed.
The couple was driving their Mercedes along Bonham Road in Sai Wan at around 3pm on Sunday when the tree keeled over onto their roof.
The 67-year-old man and his 60-year-old wife were pinned in by the huge trunk and had to wait for firefighters to cut them free.
According to a spokesman for the Drainage and Services Department, the tree was last inspected in March. Nice job, guys!
Ming Pao Daily reports that the roots had been damaged by fungi and road works in the area.
This isn’t the first time unsafe trees have caused serious accidents in Hong Kong. In August last year a heavily pregnant woman was killed by a falling tree in Robinson Road, Mid-Levels, while a female HKU student was killed in Stanley in another incident in 2008.
