Duck and cover! Hong Kong National Day fireworks to take on ‘war-like’ theme

If you have the soul of a dog and are scared of fireworks (some people are, you know), you’re going to be extra freaked out on Oct. 1.

Hong Kong will be celebrating National Day as usual, but this year the firework display at Victoria Harbour is apparently set to take on a decidedly war-like feel due to 2015 marking 70 years since Japan’s surrender in the Second World War.

HKFP claims an organiser of this year’s National Day display said 23,000 fireworks will be fired over 23 minutes, with the “effect of alarms and exploding missiles” used to “create a war-like atmosphere”.

Let’s hope there aren’t too many veterans with PTSD in Hong Kong on that date.

This year’s fireworks display will be the first in two years.

The show was cancelled in 2013 after 39 people were killed in the Lamma Island ferry disaster.

The official reason for cancelling the show again last year was to commemorate the tragedy, but with the decision being made on Sept. 29 – one day after authorities fired tear gas into crowds of pro-democracy supporters – many speculated that the presence of street occupations in the area was a deciding factor.
