Dozens of Hongkongers suffer food poisoning from pre-packed Taiwanese sandwiches

When it comes to food you should worry about eating in Hong Kong, you’d think a pedestrian ham sandwich would be the least of your troubles. Think again.

The Centre for Health and Protection (CHP) is warning the public to steer well clear of Horng Ryen Jen sandwiches after 29 people contracted food poisoning from them last month.

Victims experienced gastroenteritis symptoms including abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and fever after eating the sandwiches.

The popular Taiwanese brand is sold in multiple supermarkets and shops all over Hong Kong.

Some ordered the sadistic sarnies online, some ate them at trade shows, and others purchased them from supermarkets in Taikoo Shing, Tsim Sha Tsui and Kowloon Bay.

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has advised the public not to consume the sandwiches while investigations continue.

If the snacks are found to be unfit for human consumption, the manufacturer could be fined HKD50,000 and handed down six months in jail.
