Dowry Diminished? Lesbian ‘daughter seller’ Cecil Chao loses HKD10 million in burglary

If you were planning on scooping the reward money for wooing the lesbian daughter of flamboyant Hong Kong tycoon Cecil Chao into heterosexual marriage, you may find the dowry has decreased somewhat. There goes that plan!

In the latest of a string of burglaries at luxury homes while Hong Kong police were distracted by the city’s widespread pro-democracy protests, around HKD10 million-worth of antiques, jewellery and watches were reportedly stolen from a safe in a bathroom at Villa Cecil on Victoria Road, Pok Fu Lam.

According to a report in Ming Pao Daily, thieves entered the maze-like property through a window while the security system was down. The burglary was discovered when Chao’s 35-year-old girlfriend found the bathroom locked from the inside.

Chao, 78, chairman of property company Cheuk Nang, hit headlines worldwide after famously offering HKD500 million to any man who could tempt his daughter Gigi Chao into marriage when he learnt she had wed her lesbian partner in 2012. Strangely enough, no-one has succeeded yet.

According to the SCMP, the break in at Villa Cecil marks the third luxury Hong Kong house to be burgled in the last week while a quarter of the territory’s 28,000-strong police force were otherwise occupied (pun intended).
