An Indonesian domestic worker was arrested in Kwai Chung last Friday on drug possession charges, Sing Tao Daily reports.
The 37-year-old domestic helper had reportedly started working for her employer, surnamed Au Yeung, mere days before arousing suspicion for her lengthy trips to the bathroom.
At 9.42pm on Friday evening, Au Yeung allegedly smelled a strong, acidic odour emanating from the bathroom and opened the door to find a small aluminium foil packet, containing a small quantity of unidentified powder. Yeung promptly called the police.
After conducting a search of the helper’s belongings, police seized a small amount of suspected opium from her handbag, and arrested her for possessing an illegal drug.
Authorities are now trying to determine where the drugs came from and if the helper is involved with a cartel.
Chairman of the Hong Kong TKI Association, Leung Hing-ki, expressed his surprise, and said examples of maids abusing drugs are very few, due to their low incomes.
Leung warned newly arrived Indonesian helpers to be careful when making new friends and acquaintances, and to stay away from unknown substances.
He also cautioned foreign domestic helpers to avoid carrying baggage of behalf of others when crossing international borders to avoid accidentally becoming mules.
