Dog dies from smoke inhalation despite firefighters performing CPR for 30 mins

A golden retriever died from smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in an apartment building at 39 Kam Lam Street in Mong Kok on Saturday afternoon.

Shortly after 2pm, a fire started inside a flat and 60 people were evacuated from the building to a safe place, reports Apple Daily. No one was injured.

It is believed that the fire started from incense burning at a traditional Chinese altar.

Thirty minutes later, firefighters had extinguished the flames but found a golden retriever having difficulty breathing inside the flat where the fire originated.

The firefighters brought the dog outside onto the curb, and put an oxygen mask around his muzzle. They then performed CPR on the dog for half an hour as its worried owner watched. Sadly, despite their efforts, the poor dog did not survive.

According to a veterinarian interviewed by Apple Daily, the firefighters did the right thing by giving the dog an oxygen mask and performing CPR.

But Dr. Siu adds that they should have brought the canine to the nearest vet for more extensive treatment to improve its chances of survival.
