Police have arrested a 56-year-old woman for suspected cruelty to animals after she allegedly tossed a dog out of her fifth-floor apartment window yesterday.
The suspect, surnamed Cheung, was known to suffer from depression after receving burns to her face years earlier, Apple Daily reports.
She had been living in her apartment on the fifth floor of a tower block on the Shin Ming Estate in Tseung Kwan O for six years. Cheung also lived with two dogs, one of which was given to her by a younger brother.
The newspaper reported that her recent episode was triggered after one of the dogs passed away because of illness.
At 11am yesterday, cleaners on the estate noticed a steady stream of household items and clothes being thrown out of Cheung’s apartment, which would then land on the canopy of a walkway next to the tower blocks.
Emergency services, accompanied by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, arrived at the estate after eye witnesses reported seeing a poodle being thrown out of the window.
Police climbed onto the canopy where the dog landed, and it was declared dead at the scene.
Video of officers carrying the dog away from the estate in a plastic bag was uploaded online and contains scenes some viewers might find upsetting.
Cheung refused to unlock her door when police arrived at her apartment though finally relented after four hours of negotiating with officers.
