Dodging Digital and Deodorant: Hong Kong holidaymakers happy to leave both phones and personal hygiene at home

Who wudda funk it? We’re not the nation most tied to our mobile phones when on holiday, according to a new survey. Apparently, we are only in 11th place, with 46 percent of Hong Kong respondents telling hotels.com that we can’t leave our phones behind when heading on our jollies.

The nation most attached to their gadgets is apparently Thailand (85 percent), followed closely by Korea (78 percent) and Japan (69 percent).

However, 75 percent of us admit that we continue to check work emails while away, and 55 percent can’t go without social media in some form or another. Are those Hongkongers without their phones seriously heading into internet cafes? This somehow doesn’t seem quite right.

What we can believe, however, is that on a list of 10 important travel items, Hongkongers rank deodorant as the least important, behind travel documents (yeah, obviously) and a gym kit (without deodorant?!).

We were also one of the nations cited as least likely to embellish our holiday stories (nine percent), with our neighbours over in China-proper coming top of the pile at 67 percent. Well at least they admit it!

So although we might be able to leave our phones at home, our love for transparency and our own body odour goes with us all over the world.
