Doctor’s assistant steals HK$2 million from employer

In a course of 10 years, an assistant, Chan Suet-yee (49) managed to steal HK$2.03 million from her gynecologist employer, Lui Kit-ying.

Chan started work at Lui’s clinic at Hang Lung Centre in Causeway Bay in the first year it opened in 1987. Chan was hired to register patients, answer calls, and manage consultation schedules. Chan would keep records of the consultations and gave the clinic’s earnings to Lui on a daily basis.

Lui expressed she was suspicious when taxable income was less in 2009 compared to 2010 even though business appeared the same, which is when Lui started checking records and discrepancies in the records. An external auditor found more errors, so Lui fired and arrested Chan in Feb. 2010.

Chan’s defense team claimed that Lui concealed taxable income and made Lui the scapegoat. Lui denies such allegations but agreed Chan did have a heavy workload which might have led her to make mistakes.

Trial is ongoing.
