Doctor who cut baby’s finger off by mistake compensates HK$520,000

A well-known paediatrician Dr. Chan was treating a laceration on a 14-month-old baby boy’s ring finger when he accidentally cut his finger off (how could that even happen?!), prompting the parents to sue. The incident happened in 2009.

The parents originally demanded $6.5 million in compensation, but was awarded HK$310,000 instead. Unhappy about the amount over the distress they suffered, the parents appealed and the judge awarded another HK$210,000, making the doctor’s total compensation HK$520,000. According to an expert, the baby, now a toddler, is quite bright and has a good memory, but seems unhappy when someone asks him about his finger.
