Doctor says woman accused of pouring hot water on maid is too weak to tip over a tall cup

In a bizarre twist in the city’s latest case involving a Hongkonger being accused of assaulting their foreign domestic worker, doctors have testified in court that Au Wai Chun, the defendant, is physically unable to perform the act required to tip the cup in question in order to pour water on her domestic helper, Begum Raksona, due to her astonishing lack of strength and other chronic physical ailments.

Dr. Poon Tak Lun, an orthopaedics specialist who first met Au in 1992, says that Au is so weak that he lacked the equipment to even be able to measure just exactly how weak she was, as the regular equipment didn’t even work for Au, reports the SCMP.

Apparently the cup is so tall that Au lacks the strength and mobility to be able to tip the cup in a way that would make it spill water, as testified by Dr Poon and by physiotherapist Wong Yin Hing. The SCMP describes the cup as looking like “an insulated travel mug”.

Since the last time we reported on the case, Au has said that she had been in the shower at the time of the alleged assault.

The court was told that she suffers from chronic pain in her limbs and severe pain in her neck from various health problems. Au has worn a neck brace every day of the trial, which will continue until August 7th.
