Do you make these in high rise? Hong Kong opens first eco-home

Hong Kong has its first ever carbon-neutral home, and apparently you can have one just like it! Unveiled this week, the Eco-Home in Kowloon Bay is said to be based on a typical Hong Kong apartment, if you don’t count the massive amounts of space and the lush surrounding gardens that is!

A joint project between Construction Industry Council (CIC) and Zero Carbon Building Limited, the house consists of a living room, open kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, all kitted out with the latest sustainable gizmos. These include electricity-generating flooring, a faucet that heats its own water, portable hydrophobic mini-farms and bladeless ceiling fans (not quite sure how that one works).

The installation is now open to the public, who can book tours of the facilities or even the venue as a whole. It is hoped the initiative will encourage Hongkongers to adopt more holistic and sustainable practices into their everyday lives.

Gary Chen, Executive Director of the New World Development Charity that helped fund the project, said, “We fully support the Eco-home at ZCB, with modern home design philosophy and advanced green technologies to show the public that a sustainable lifestyle does not necessarily mean primitive living with hardships. In fact, it can be stylish and modern.”

The Zero Carbon Building is located at 8 Sheung Yuet Rd, Kowloon Bay. Visit the website for more info.
