A supernatural thriller based on the death of Chinese Canadian student Elisa Lam is in the works, drawing horrified reactions and disgust. Created by screenwriting brothers Brandon and Philip Murphy, the movie script was sold to Sony for US$300,000, and critics are urging the parents to sue the producers for exploiting their daughter’s death.
Lam, whose parents are Hong Kong immigrants, drowned in the rooftop water tank of a Los Angeles hotel early last year. She suffered from bipolar disorder and her disappearance became notorious after a video of her behaving strangely in a hotel elevator went viral. The creepy video showed Lam gesticulating, conversing, and appearing to hide from someone, despite appearing alone.
She was missing for three weeks before a maintenance worker discovered her body last Feb. 19, after guests complained about a foul taste in the water. Later, it emerged that Satanist serial killer Richard Ramirez had lived at the Cecil Hotel for several months, sparking all kinds of hair-raising speculations.
