Diamonds worth millions stolen from wardrobe safe in Hong Kong flat

Hong Kong police are investigating a home break-in at an apartment in Ngau Tau Kok yesterday, in which over HKD1 million worth of diamonds were stolen from a wardrobe safe.

The flat owner, a 55-year-old woman, contacted police yesterday morning when she discovered that one of her (no doubt many) bedrooms had been ransacked.

A police spokeswoman told the SCMP that the safe’s key was missing and diamonds had been taken from inside. Marks were apparently also found on the safe, suggesting someone had tried to prise it open before finding the key.

The incident follows a series of high-profile burglaries earlier this month.

On Jan. 3, a safe containing HKD5.9 million worth of gold and jewellery was raided at a home in Yuen Long. Two days later, HKD2 million in cash and HKD100,000 worth of gold ornaments was stolen from a residence in Mong Kok. The victim said she stashed her valuables at home because she doesn’t trust banks.

It seems bedroom safes can’t be trusted either.
