A man who was found dead in the waters off Aberdeen today is feared to be a sailor who went missing during Typhoon Hato yesterday.
At 8:43am today, marine police patrolling near the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter discovered the man floating in the sea. He was confirmed dead on the scene, HK01 reports.
The man is described to be of Chinese descent, roughly 50 to 55 years old. He is 1.65 meters tall, of medium build, and was wearing a green and white striped shirt and grey underwear. No identification documents were found on his body.
According to HK01, the deceased may be a sailor who went missing yesterday during Typhoon Hato. Yesterday afternoon, the Government Flying Services rescued 39 sailors who were trapped on their vessels roughly 15 miles southwest of Hong Kong. Two crew members went missing and were not saved.
Investigating officers are currently trying to determine the man’s identity, and said they do not believe that there were any suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death at this time.
Yesterday’s typhoon was the worst to hit Hong Kong in five years. Hurricane-force winds and heavy rain left a trail of destruction in the city, including 121 injured people, 480 canceled flights, and 692 fallen trees.
One man, aged 83, died after he fell into the sea from Kowloon City Pier at about 3pm, while the No. 8 Gale or Storm Signal was in force. According to Apple Daily, police found a suicide note on the scene.
