Hong Kong reported 2,815 daily Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, a sharp rise from 2,268 a day earlier.
Of the new infections, 2,672 are local, while 143 are imported.
The city also recorded one new death, that of a 71-year-old woman.
Gladys Kwan, chief manager for clinical effectiveness and technology management at the Hospital Authority, said the patient had a history of diabetes and high blood pressure, and had suffered from a stroke in the past.
She had also been bedridden for a long period and was taken care of by her family at home.
Kwan also said the authority is “very concerned” about the increasing number of hospitalized and newly hospitalized Covid-19 cases.
Newly hospitalized cases have increased from 30 to 40 a day in early June to more than 100 in the past few weeks.
Meanwhile, the number of hospitalized cases has gone up from about 400 a day in early June to around 830 now.
“The number has doubled,” she said.
“We are worried that the Covid-19 situation has gotten more serious.”
She urged residents to stay alert, get all the necessary jabs and get tested regularly.
