The wife of former chief executive Leung Chun-ying has been sued by American Express for failing to pay over HK$93,000 (US$11,850) of credit card debt.
According to Sing Tao Daily, the company filed documents to the District Court on Wednesday detailing how, as of April 28, Regina Leung had not paid HK$93,155.41 in fees for an American Express credit card, which has a penalty interest rate of 35.34 percent per annum.
The document also noted that the firm had repeatedly requested Leung to repay the debt, including sending her a lawyer’s letter on May 4.
However, Leung still did not repay the amount.
Hence, the plaintiff submitted the request to the court to order her to pay the charges, interest and late surcharges.
It is not the first time the former chief executive’s family courted controversy for monetary issues.
Leung Chai-yan, the couple’s oldest daughter, was slammed by the Hong Kong public in 2014 for saying that taxpayers funded her “beautiful shoes and dresses” when her father was in office.
