In a televised interview on ATV, CY Leung said that the protests are “out of control” even for the organisers. He also stated that it’s “not entirely a domestic movement, as external forces are involved”.
Alex Chow, the leader of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, said that this statement is “evidence that CY is hoping to crack down on the entire movement”, reports the BBC.
“He should probably have solid evidence before making such a statement,” Chow continued. “He can’t just say there is foreign infiltration and this is really irresponsible.”
According to the SCMP, some analysts believe that claiming that foreign forces are interfering in Hong Kong may discourage foreign governments from making a stand in favour of the protests.
Joshua Wong, the 18-year-old leader of Scholarism, posted a cheeky update on Twitter in response to Leung’s remarks.
梁振英認為佔領行動外來勢力介入,唔知佢係咪覺得我個人有外來勢力介入啦,總之我個人唯一同外國有關系既就係:
韓國手機
美國電腦
日本高達
當然所有都係Made in China :o)

Wong said: “CY Leung believes that the Occupy movement has been subject to foreign intervention. I don’t know if he thinks I personally have been subject to foreign intervention but, in brief, here’s how I’ve been influenced by foreign forces:
- Korean cell phone
- American computer
- Japanese [anime series] Gundam
Of course, they’re all Made In China :o)”
Indeed, these two things are universal: the “Made in China” label and smiley faces.
