Yesterday, CY Leung received a thank-you card from four adorable kids, representatives from different wildlife conservation groups and Hong Kong lawmaker Elizabeth Quat for his earlier pledge to ban ivory trade in Hong Kong. Wait, did we hear that right… public appreciation for CY Leung?
During his January 2016 policy address, Chief Executive Leung promised to change Hong Kong’s reputation as the epicentre of ivory trade, which has driven the rampant poaching of African elephants.
He pledged that the government would ban the import and export of ivory while enforcing harsh penalties against the smuggling of endangered species.
This milestone can be credited to the hard work of local BAMF activists from WildAid and WWF-Hong Kong, with the help of (often controversial) politician Elizabeth Quat, who have long been lobbying the government to change the existing policies.
At an informal event in which the group presented the card, Yoyo Wong, a five-year-old kindergarten student with the best rapper name ever, said to Hong Kong’s leader: “Chief Executive, thank you for pledging to save the elephants in Africa. I want to see elephants when I grow up, so please work faster to ban the ivory trade!”
If you aren’t a monster and would like to help Lil’ Yoyo see elephants in the future, WildAid urges you to speak in support of the government’s plans to phase out the local ivory trade and to protect the declining number of elephants across Africa.
