A customer who bought bread from the Wan Chai outlet of a French bakery chain found a cockroach baked into the underside of the pastry.

According to the customer’s Facebook post Wednesday morning, the bread was from Passion by Gerard Dubois’ Lee Tung Avenue store.

Writing in Russian, the customer said she is a regular at the ground-floor cafe and had always had a good impression of its hygiene standards.

She added that she was disappointed by the incident and will no longer be returning.

Passion told Coconuts that it is aware of what happened and has taken “immediate actions to prevent any similar things happening in the future.”

The Wan Chai outlet will close earlier at 6pm on Thursday for “deep clean arrangement,” a statement the chain attached in a message read, and the store has also “hired one more professional to conduct extra pest control.”

It’s not the first time the French cafe, which has six outlets in Hong Kong, has had its food safety standards questioned.

In March last year, it made unsavory headlines after video taken in the chain’s Tsim Sha Tsui store showed a rat nibbling on a muffin in a pastry counter.

Passion released a statement apologizing over the incident, adding that it would close the outlet temporarily to carry out pest control work.
