After a clip of a couple in Hong Kong having sex on a balcony went viral in June, leading to the arrest of the man and woman allegedly involved in the incident, Hong Kong police force insiders recently revealed to the media that several cops not involved in the case been disciplined for using the force’s internal computer records to find out what the woman looked like.
A police insider told SCMP on Sunday that a “few” officers had looked up the information “out of curiosity” but that their unauthorized access led to a probe by the force’s internal investigation department.
Although the officers were appropriately disciplined, the insider said that the probe found there was no evidence of criminal intent and denied rumors that officers had shared images of the woman on WhatsApp, as some other media had reported.
A report from The Standard says that “hundreds” of officers who were not involved in the case had used the internal system to check out the video clip.
The clip, which is around 17-second long, shows a woman — who was mostly unclothed — and a naked man having sex on the balcony of the unit of a luxury residence in Kai Tak.
The woman, who lived in the flat, was arrested on June 7 while the man was arrested 5 days later. Both have been charged with outraging public decency, which carries a maximum sentence of 7 years.
