Cow escapes slaughterhouse, gets euthanised

Yesterday afternoon a young cow escaped death at the slaughterhouse only to be euthanised at the hands of a vet a few hours later, reports Apple Daily.

At around 1pm, a herd of 54 bovine were being delivered to a slaughterhouse in Sheung Shui when one mischievous cow – feeling that its life had a grander purpose than ending up in a bowl of beef brisket noodles – escaped through the gates, injuring two workers in the process.

A third worker followed the fugitive, who wound up in the nearby Ng Tung River. There, the poor thing battled attempts by slaughterhouse and government workers to recapture it, as it let out angry and determined bellows.

After half an hour, the beast finally succumbed to the tranquiliser darts shot by an Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department vet. He was placed in a net, dragged out of the river and later euthanised.

A Food and Envronmental Hygiene Department spokesperson said that the authorities will review the protocol for delivering live cattle.

The president of the Lantau Buffalo Association estimates the cow to have been around four years old.
