A man who gained viral notoriety after he was filmed holding up an MTR train by repeatedly kicking and wrenching open its doors has been fined US$128 by a Hong Kong court.
Lee Yuet-lung drunkenly thrashed his way into the spotlight after a video of him waging a one-man battle against the closing doors of a train at Lok Fu MTR station in May was widely circulated.
Appearing at Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Court yesterday — wearing what may in fact be the same gray polo shirt he was seen wearing in the video — Lee pleaded guilty to interfering with the train doors within the railway premises, and to using abusive language that breached the MTR by-laws.
Ming Pao reported that at around 10pm on May 3, MTR staff received a report that they couldn’t close the train doors at Lok Fu station. When a member of staff arrived at the platform, they found Lee, who was described as emotional at the time, blocking the train doors from closing.
Lee was also filmed swearing at the MTR staffer several times after he was told to leave the train, repeatedly yelling “motherf**ker.”
He eventually got off the train and the case was reported to the police. Ming Pao reports the train was stopped for nearly two minutes.
In a mitigating statement, Lee asked for leniency saying that he was drunk at the time, and hoped Special Magistrate Andrew Mok Tze-chung would consider a light sentence as he was a first-time offender and promised not to behave that way again.
Mok said that Lee had inconvenienced other passengers, and that his use of foul language to insult others made the situation worse.
Mok, however, acknowledged that Lee was drunk, and fined him HK$500 (US$64) for each count.
