A man and a woman in a Mercedes that ploughed into two British women on Aberdeen Street, SoHo, on Saturday night, may have lied to the police about who was driving, it has been revealed.
The couple was arrested at their North Point flat on Monday night after a witness phoned police on learning that the man claimed to be driving at the time of the crash.
“After the crash, the woman was seen getting out from the driver’s seat of the car and the man left the vehicle from the front passenger seat”, a police source told the SCMP.
The 31-year-old man, surnamed Chong, at first refused to take a breathalyser test but eventually agreed after making numerous phone calls and drinking water non-stop. The test showed he had been drinking alcohol, but not enough to exceed the legal limit.
The most badly injured of the two women, 30-year-old Karen Thomas, was reportedly sent flying through the air when the black Mercedes lost control at around 11pm, mounted the pavement and hit her and her friend before crashing into a storefront.
Thomas is still in intensive care after undergoing two operations, while the other woman, also 30, has now been discharged.
Chong and his 29-year-old companion, surnamed Wong, were arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, but released on bail without being charged. They must report back to police in a month’s time.
