A former Hong Kong Correctional Services staff member and five others allegedly involved in a scam that saw multiple people impersonate prisoners’ relatives in order to access their financial assets were charged. All six will appear at Tsuen Wan Magistrates’ Courts today.
The 36-year-old former Correctional Services staff, surnamed Leung, purportedly arranged for a 47-year-old housewife surnamed Hui and other unnamed individuals to pose as four then-prisoners’ friends and family during visiting hours at Tung Fuk Correctional Institution on Lantau between September 2013 and July 2014, reports HK01.
Due to the false identities she and others allegedly presumed, the prisoners’ assets – which were under the authorities’ custody – were successfully obtained.
Leung was charged with misconduct in public office and conspiring to defraud. Hui, along with the four implicated then-prisoners aged between 46 and 53, was also charged with the latter.
Among the ploys allegedly used in the scam, Leung was said to have posted 18 letters on behalf of two prisoners.
The sum they obtained from the authorities amounted to a total of HKD36,005.
