Convicted rapist hospitalised in Hong Kong after attempting suicide in cell

A convicted rapist was prevented from killing himself this morning after correctional officers found him attempting suicide in his Hong Kong cell.

The 41-year-old was discovered at 2:44am attempting to hang himself using a bed sheet at the Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre in Tuen Mun.

He was immediately stopped by prison officers and given emergency treatment while still conscious, before being transferred to a public hospital.

The case will be followed up by a psychologist from the Correctional Services Department.

A spokesman for the CSD said, “The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services.”
