People throughout history have always gone to crazy lengths in the name of beauty, be it tightening your waist with a corset or wearing shoes with tips so long you needed to chain the tip to your leg.
There are plenty of ways to get pretty, but sadly one of them might just be a bit too risky. Just yesterday Hong Kong’s Consumer Council warned the public of the dangers of “eyelash extension” services provided by beauty centers, citing cases of eye infections and blurred vision.
The Council found that some eyelash treatments offered by beauty centres – such as sticking extensions onto eyelashes – carry some risk, as the adhesive could cause an allergic reaction, according to Bastille Post.
If the extensions or tools used are unclean, this can also cause serious infections or inflammations. Go figure.
And when eyelash treatments involve pulling the lashes to applying the extensions, the natural growth of the (real) eyelashes could also be affected.
In one specific case cited by the Council, a woman started feeling something in her left eye after treatments. Four weeks later she experienced pain and blurry vision. Further analysis suggested that the pain was caused by parts of the adhesive entering her eye, causing inflammation.
Consumers who wish to get eyelash extensions have been urged to seriously consider the potential risks associated with the treatment, and those with eye conditions or sensitivity are recommended not to seek this treatment at all.
Worth it? Not worth it? Just do yourself a favor and think long and hard about it before you do. Hopefully as long as you want your new eyelashes to be.
