Consumer Council finds high caffeine levels in energy drinks

The Hong Kong consumer council tested 19 energy drinks sold in Hong Kong and found six of them to contain high levels of caffeine. In some drinks, the caffeine levels were much higher than a cup of coffee or milk tea.

The Oriental Daily reports that test results found that Coca Cola Relentless Energy Drink (origin), Monster Energy Drink, and Monster Chaos Juice, had over 85 milligrams of caffeine per bottle, which is over the recommended daily intake for children aged 10 to 12.

Additionally, Coca Cola Relentless Energy Drink (origin) and Monster Energy Drink contains 10 to 11 tablets of sugar – much over the recommended sugar intake for adults.

SSP Cup Drink and Amino Gear have been found to contain alcohol content, even though the alcohol content found is not high, it’s not indicated on the packaging and so consumers should consume such drinks with caution.
