Construction worker injured in highway collision confirmed to be brain-dead

One of the three road maintenance workers who was knocked down by a taxi on a Kowloon highway this week is now brain-dead, his family says.

Wong Ka-fai, 33, has been in intensive care since Tuesday morning, but was confirmed to have ceased circulatory and respiratory functions at 4pm today, Apple Daily reports.

A source told Apple Daily that Wong’s doctors are informing his family on the procedure for withdrawing life support.

Chan Fai, Chan Muk-yuen, and Wong were rearranging traffic cones on Tsing Kwai Highway when a taxi collided with them at 4:25am on Tuesday.

Chan Fai died on the scene, while Chan Muk-yuen was declared dead at Princess Margaret Hospital later that morning.

The taxi driver, a 54-year-old man surnamed Lun, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. He is suspected to have fallen asleep at the wheel.

A police source said on Tuesday that there were adequate warnings and direction signs at the scene, and all workers were wearing reflective safety vests.
