The government has urged Hong Kongers aged 50 and above to get screened for colorectal cancer after a random sample of 10,732 seniors found that 14 percent has signs of colorectal cancer. The rate of colorectal cancer in Hong Kong is now higher than western countries like Europe or the United States.
The government has plans to roll out an early screening program, which can lower the death rate of colorectal cancer by as much as 70 percent. The Chinese University Faculty of Medicine also has plans to screen another 5,000 volunteers aged between 40-70 for colorectal cancer. According to medical experts, high-risk victims include those who are overweight or with diabetes.
Colorectal cancer is most common among Hongkongers with lung cancer coming second and breast cancer third.
