Cold weather warning looms ahead of wintry weekend

Hong Kong’s observatory may soon issue its first cold weather warning of the winter, with temperatures set to plummet to a practically Arctic 12 degrees or lower this weekend.

In its nine-day outlook, the observatory predicts the mercury will begin dropping towards the end of the week, before diving “significantly” late Saturday.

Both Sunday and Monday are expected to have daily low temperatures of 12 degrees, while it could be even chillier in the New Territories.

The observatory officials defines a day as “cold” if the daily low falls below 12 degrees.

Such temperatures are typically accompanied by cold weather warning. Humidity, wind speed and nipple firmness, though, are also taken into account. Well, at least two of those factors are considered.

The observatory this year issued three such warnings in the first two months of the year, with the coldest temperature recorded on Feb. 26, when the mercury fell to 10.6.

According to the SCMP, only one cold weather warning was issued in December last year but it fell after Christmas, and was in force for less than 48 hours.

The Observatory also warned of a tropical cyclone currently forming in the seas east of the Philippines due to an area of intensifying low pressure.

It also described a strong easterly airstream that is affecting the coast of Guangdong, saying weather today and tomorrow will be cloudy, with a few light rain patches and fresh easterly winds.
