Coconuts HK at New.Now.Next journalism conference

Former Ming Pao editor Kevin Lau, who was brutally stabbed earlier this year, said he is recovering from his attack, but it may take a year or two for his feet and toes to resume basic functionality.

Lau gave the update on his condition in an exclusive video played during a panel on press freedom at the New.Now.Next journalism conference (N3Con) in Hong Kong last weekend.

While Lau couldn’t comment on his attack due to the ongoing criminal trial of the two suspected attackers, he did convey a message to Hong Kong’s police.

“I would like to urge the Hong Kong police force to use every possible means to investigate and find out the mastermind behind the scenes, the person who ordered the attack on an innocent journalist in broad daylight,” said Lau. “The people in Hong Kong look forward to progress being made, justice being done and fear among journalists being removed.”

Other speakers included Jeff Widener, who shot the iconic Tiananmen Square photograph “Tank Man” and Coconuts Multimedia Director Alexander Hotz, who spoke on a panel on How to Build Your Own Digital Domain. Hotz discussed the evolution of Coconuts Media and the challenges of starting a news site in today’s digital landscape, alongside fellow panelists Shanghaist’s Kenneth Tan, Hong Wrong’s Tom Grundy and InMedia’s Oi Wan Lam.

N3Con is an annual gathering of top journalists from media outlets like CNN, Bloomberg, Reuters, Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, among others. The event was organized by the Asian American Journalists Association and Journalism & Media Studies Center at Hong Kong University.
