COCO Recap: This week in the news, Jan. 13-17

This Week in the News is your weekly roundup of the top headlines in Hong Kong. If you have to read only one thing today to keep from being clueless, this is it. This breakdown has been arranged in chronological order, starting from Monday.

Pantsless passengers on the MTR

American group Improve Everywhere’s annual No Pants Subway Ride hit Hong Kong again. Leg-bearing female participants got uncles all excited and men in trunks got local schoolgirls all giddy on the MTR.

What? No allowance? Let me burn your house down!

What a spoilt little brat this 23-year-old, surnamed Lau, young man is. His mother refused to lend him money so he decided to burn down his Wong Tai Sin flat down, without a care that the fire could have injured and killed his neighbours.

Indonesian helper cruelly beaten, starved and tortured by HK employer

This is terribly sad, and we’re glad it has gotten the media attention it deserves. 23-year-old Erwiana Sulistyaningsih came to Hong Kong to work for the first time last year, only to have monstrous employers who didn’t pay her, feed her and worst physically abused her so bad she is still lying in a hospital bed with permanent scars and psychological damage. Video of couple having sex in an LKF club bathroom goes viral

Sex does grab people’s attention huh? We’ve seen part one and two of the video clip and it’s nothing more than two slightly intoxicated young kids getting it on in the bathroom – some reverse cowgirl and doggy style action, but that’s about it! Read more about why it’s gone viral here!

Three mainland mothers jailed for birth tourism in HK

Yay! The Hong Kong courts are finally taking measures to keep emergency rooms and maternity wards from overcrowding by giving three mainland Chinese mothers 12 months in jail for overstaying in the city, hopefully to discourage birth tourism.

Uh-oh second H7N9 death in Hong Kong

We hope things don’t get any more serious but a 65-year-old man is the second person confirmed with the virus to have died.

Mainland organizations now smuggling baby diapers

With mainland organisations clearing out diapers at pharmacies and supermarkets to sell to the grey market across the border, local mothers now have to worry about not having enough diapers for the child on top of baby milk powder formula.

Bad luck public housing units unwanted

Although there is a shortage of public housing and 230,000 people are waiting for a place to stay, there are hundreds of units unwanted by Hongkongers because some unfortunate event had occurred in the home (like a murder or a suicide).
