Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying was commended yesterday for leading fellow high-ranking government officials in a beach clean-up at Shui Hau Wan.
However, according to Apple Daily, cleaning crews comprised of staff from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department and Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department were sent to Shui Hau in the early morning to “tidy” the washed-up rubbish before Leung arrived.

Lantau locals told Apple Daily that workers arrived at 7am to stage the scene for Leung’s clean-up by raking leaves from footpaths and arranging trash into neat piles for the CE and his fellow bureacrats. Seems counterintuitive, but okay.

The staff were apparently seen unloading bottled water for the VIPs to drink as they cleaned up other single-use plastics. Oh, the irony.
In total, Leung and his colleagues reportedly collected 1,350 kilos of rubbish. According to a government spokesperson, Leisure and Cultural Services Department and FEHD staff collected a total of 78,000 kilos of trash from various beaches and coastal areas between July 1 and 9.
Speaking to reporters after the clean-up, Leung attributed the massive amounts of rubbish to heavy rains and floods washing domestic garbage from mainland China to Hong Kong.
