Seriously, just HK$4? That’s definitely not enough to encourage smokers to quit. The Financial Secretary announced today that cigarette prices will increase by HK$4 with immediate effect.
At HK$54 for a pack of cigarettes, the tax for cigarettes is at about 70 percent – the very minimum percentage recommended by the World Health Organisation.
The Financial Secretary thinks that the increase in cost of cigarettes will be an incentive to smokers to quit but Chairwoman of the Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health thinks the amount is too little to make any difference.
We agree, a HK$4 increase is really just loose change.
